Second Wind Home for Women and Children

Dryden, New York

The Second Wind organization in Ithaca, New York was looking to add to their existing housing for unhoused men with a home for unhoused women and their children.

Built entirely with volunteer labor, the design, currently under construction, had to be simple and economical. By providing design development drawings at no charge, I was able to save the nonprofit money which could be redirected towards the unhoused which it serves.

Within a 40' by 40' footprint a common atrium, front and back porches and four apartments, two single bedroom and two double bedroom, were desired. By shearing the geometry into two complimentary volumes in plan, the building was able to meet the requirements of the program while scaling the overall presence of the construction to its residential context.
