"The Twist" Structural System Model

2019 - Research

Jevnaker, Norway

In collaboration with Andrew Boghossian and William Beal

The building represented by this model of unadorned structure was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group. It bridges a river and connects a trail meandering through the sculpture park of the Scandinavian Kistefos Museum.

The building is a complex assemblage of braced frames. Within each bay of the massive twisting truss, a single cross brace is found, sized to work in both tension and compression, resisting wind forces and any other lateral loading applied to the structure. The only exception to the single unit is the appearance of K-trusses in the bays above the foundations on either side . The presence of the shorter members in these bays allows the entire structure to have greater resistance to buckling. The shallow foundation on the shorter end of the truss is possible due to the larger amount of surface area through which vertical loads can be transferred into the ground.
