Vaulted Chapel

This physical model represents the culmination of a series of experiments exploring the potentials of zenithal light. This chapel takes the iconic vault and folds parts of the ceiling upward, a technique originally developed with paper studies. The result of this simple move captures light and diffuses it across the top of the vault where it remains. The gaze of worshippers standing below is directed toward the heavens.

The model is constructed much as the building would be: a foundation was poured, the structural arches were put in place, and the folded elements were infilled to create the illusion of a continuous surface.
